It's a good life...it's a foodlife.

What is a foodlife? Well, it is a word that we have coined to describe a certain lifestyle, one in which good food is appreciated and shared with family and friends… and sometimes strangers.

It is about savouring those moments where food and life come together…and there are many. We believe that food brings people together and we relish every opportunity to participate in this lifestyle …and then to write about it. And while we are advocates of the slow cooking movement, sometimes an impromptu, informal gathering with pizza, beer and good friends can be very satisfying as well.

Our experiences with food are often closely linked with our emotions and most of life’s milestones are celebrated with friends and family coming together to enjoy food while creating memories. Birthdays, showers, anniversaries, weddings and funerals are all occasions where emotions and food are intricately woven together…the exquisite taste of that fluffy white cake with the white chocolate and raspberry filling will be forever remembered when you look at the photo of the bride and groom cutting their wedding cake–love, hope and expectation clearly evident on the smiling faces looking back at you.

Many family traditions are centered on food, with recipes and methods passing down from generation to generation. Taste and smell are our best memory triggers and it is with bittersweet emotions that we remember someone who is no longer with us with food–the comforting Cabbage Rolls that your mother used to make or the melt-in-your-mouth shortbread that your grandmother baked every Christmas.

Food can also be a bridge between cultures and in this ever-shrinking world that we live in, this is true, today, more than ever. We are foodies through and through and we love to experience different cultures through their food. Wherever we travel, we always try to find an authentic, local food experience to truly get a sense of the culture. Whenever I dream of traveling, it is always with the food in mind. Making pasta in Tuscany, inhaling aromatic spices in India and munching on Crawfish in a pub in the French Quarter of New Orleans are all on my bucket list.

Some people have no interest in experimenting with their palate at all–I know, hard to believe, right?–but others are die hard foodies waiting for that perfect Heirloom Tomato, anticipating that brief window where Spot Prawns are available in B.C. or searching out the latest in restaurant trends. Regardless of where you fall on this spectrum, there is one thing that is true for all of us: food sustains our lives and we can't live without it. So you see...it really is a foodlife.
